Relationship System Refactor and Content Template Audit

Over the past development cycle, significant progress was made toward simplifying the site’s content architecture.

The primary focus was the relationship system used by Songs, Artists, Chapters, and Fragments. Historically, relationship logic had been duplicated across templates and often produced inconsistent behavior. This led to maintenance challenges and made future UX improvements difficult.

A new shared relationship architecture was introduced through dedicated helper functions and reusable view templates. Artist pages were migrated to the new system, duplicate relationship entries were eliminated, lyric aggregation was corrected, and Narrative Threads, Narrative Fragments, and Referenced In sections were standardized.

This work also served as the first practical step toward a broader visual-navigation strategy. Rather than treating content as isolated CPT pages, the site increasingly presents content through relationship-driven discovery paths.

Alongside the relationship refactor, a comprehensive audit of content templates was completed. Nearly every major CPT template was reviewed, including Artists, Songs, Profiles, Movies, Shows, Games, Images, Quotes, Excerpts, References, Videos, Chapters, and Fragments.

The audit identified several recurring patterns:

  • Duplicated Wikipedia helper functions.
  • Repeated quote and excerpt rendering logic.
  • Similar media-page structures across Movies, Shows, and Games.
  • Legacy relationship rendering systems still requiring migration.
  • Opportunities to centralize navigation and display components.

Importantly, the audit demonstrated that many templates are already structurally sound. The remaining work is increasingly focused on consolidation, reuse, and presentation improvements rather than major architectural changes.

Future development will continue migrating legacy relationship systems, consolidating duplicated helper functions, and exploring richer visual presentation methods such as compressed relationship grids and graphical lyric rendering. These improvements support the long-term goal of evolving the platform from a collection of CPT archives into a relationship-driven knowledge atlas where content itself becomes the primary navigation system.
